Well after leaving the Gold Coast we decided to head in land and stay off the Pacific Highway, so our first adventure stop took us to Nimbin as the title of this blog said Pot Capital of Australia and proud of it. Both David and I had not been to Nimbin before and let me just state, we are both glad that we did stop of and have a look at this beautiful, happy, bright, colourful place called Nimbin.
Nimbin is tucked away in the hills west of Byron Bay, Nimbin was once a sleepy little dairying village in a lush setting of farmland and forest. Today, Nimbin is known the world over as Australia’s most famous hippie destination and alternative lifestyle capital. Everyone heard about Nimbin when it shot to fame and hosted the 1973 Aquarius Festival, attracting students, hippies and visionaries from all over Australia. Once the bands left and the dust settled, a few intrepid souls stayed on to live the dreams and ideology of Aquarius and sow the seeds for today’s vibrant, sustainable community, and me being an Aquarian I found the place to be very charming and calming, I must admit they do have something?
This internationally famous village is intriguing and quirky with its unique mural street scape of indigenous, rainforest and psychedelic facades and colourful local characters, and the locals that approach you and ask if you would like to buy some pot, after all the offers I had to buy, I think I could I could become a drug cartel for the Columbians? But when you say “no dude I’m good” they don’t chase you or abuse I guess because they are too stoned to worry.
With an amazing array of cafés and shops and the extraordinary Nimbin Museum, the village also features some very interesting characters, but all harmless. David found the Fish & Chip sign funny as well as the shop owner who didn’t really know if he was coming or going, but all in all, this is Nimbin, its like time has stopped and the rest of the world just keeps on moving.
Nimbin is the perfect place to rest a while, to relax, rejuvenate and let Mother Nature work her charms.
“May the long time sun shine upon you, all love surround you, and the pure light within you, guide your way home”.
– excerpt from the original song by the Incredible String Band – adopted anthem of the 1973 Aquarius Festival.
